Western New England University College of Business names Daniel T. Garvey a Cohen Scholar

2017 Apr 14

Daniel Garvey of West Springfield, MA has been chosen to serve a prestigious two-year appointment as an ambassador of the College of Business for 2016-2018. Garvey, an Accounting major, was one of three students selected from a finalist pool of nine exceptional students.

The three students will serve a two-year appointment as student ambassadors representing the College of Business at various events throughout their junior and senior years. In extending his congratulations, Dean Kleine said "It gives me great satisfaction to see these three business students recognized for their high achievement and all-around excellence, and I'm confident that they will continue to uphold the finest traditions of the Cohen Scholarship Program."

Thirty-one sophomore business students with an overall grade-point average of 3.5 or higher were invited to apply for this prestigious honor, from which the finalists were determined based on the strength of their applications, including leadership, communication skills, citizenship, and interpersonal skills.

Associate Professor and Director of the Business Honors Program Curt Hamakawa said that he is "excited for the newest Cohen Scholars and looks forward to working with Brendan, Julia, and Dan over the next two years." They will join current juniors Zack Booth (business analytics and information management; Hampden, MA), Alona Kornberg (finance; Fairlawn, NJ), and Anna Pickard (accounting/finance; Southwick, MA) in 2017-18 at the scholars' bimonthly professional development seminar called the Cohen Chautauqua. The latest Cohen Scholars comprise the fifth cohort of the Cohen Scholarship Program, which was created in part from a $1 million gift from the estate of Frances Cohen, whose husband, Norman, attended Western New England University.
