Kevin M. Babcock Receives Skookum Award at Western New England University

Kevin Babcock of Vernon, CT, was recently named a recipient of the Skookum Award, an honor presented by Western New England University's Alumni Association. The Skookum is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in all their endeavors: academics, co-curricular activities, sports, and community service. "Skookum" is the Native American Chinook Indian word meaning "excellence." Babcock was one of 15 outstanding senior students to receive the award.

Majoring in Media Theory and Production, Babcock has been a Peer Advisor, an Academic Program Monitor, a First Year Seminar Assistant, and an Open House Associate. He is involved with several different clubs and organizations on campus, but his heart lies with Golden Bear TV (GBTV), the campus television station. During his freshman year he held the role of Promotions Director. Today Babcock is News Director, responsible for planning and executing of weekly news shows. Through his experience with GBTV, he has gained experience and has created short films, commercials, music videos, and public service announcements that have won several awards at the annual Student Media Festival.

Babcock works closely with a group of students and professors to establish the Western New England University Film Society. He is currently the President of the organization which has of 30 active members.

Babcock has had two internships. The first at WGBY, the Springfield PBS affiliate, where he worked on producing one of the stations featured programs, Connecting Points. His second internship was with Envisions Marketing Group, an advertising agency where he produced a video, created email newsletters, wrote blog posts, and even developed websites for clients. Babcock now works part-time as a Marketing Assistant at Envision Marketing. He hopes to continue working in the field of Marketing and Advertising after graduation.

Western New England University is a private, independent, coeducational institution founded in 1919.
