Dylan Carman Presents at 2016 NEURON Conference

2016 Apr 25

Dylan J. Carman, of Pittsfield, MA, was one of 15 students who attended the Northeast Under/graduate Research Organization for Neuroscience (NEURON) conference on February 28, 2016 on behalf of Western New England University.

The NEURON conference provides an open forum for neuroscience undergraduate and graduate students to discuss their work and to provide faculty an opportunity to discuss curricular and research issues in neuroscience, biopsychology and related areas.

Carman also had the opportunity to present research investigating olfactory neuron regeneration.

Carman had this to say about the conference. "The research I helped with shows that Nor-BNI, a kappa opioid receptor antagonist, stopped female rats, but not males, from relapsing and spending time in an environment where they were given morphine, after being exposed to stress. Kappa opioid receptors are located in the reward and stress pathways in the brain, and when they are activated, they can play a role in stress induced relapse, which Nor-BNI should prevent. Going to the NEURON conference allowed me to learn about many new topics in neuroscience, especially about addiction, which is one of my interests. Presenting my research at NEURON also gave me new ideas about what to focus on in the future, and other aspects I should take into consideration that I hadn't previously thought about. "
